What is the purpose of a subscript in a chemical formula?

  1. It tells you how many of a given atom are present in the compound.  H2O (with the 2 being a subscript, naturally) contains 2 hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom (we could, but don't, write 1 when there is only one...).
