  1. Set asides....self explanatory a percentage of your total acreage which is set aside and is left to grow wild, therefore providing a better habitat for wildlife, and reducing overproduction of cereals

The woodland grant scheme is where farmers get a grant to aid them in converting some of their land to woodland

Here is the interesting bit...Subsidies and Arable area payments no longer exist in agriculture and havent done for 2yrs..they have been superceeded by the Single Farm Payment...this is a payment to farmers that covers the whole of their land...the more land the more money. This is paid whether the farmer chooses to farm the land or not,as a result a lot of smaller farmers have chosen not to farm their land and have left it fallow as it is bloody hard work for very little profit. There are lots of ins and outs to this payment, too many to rave on about here.

  2. Set aside is where the farmer has to leave 10% of their land natural (i.e. don't farm on it) otherwise they do not get subsidies.  This is done to protect the envioronment and prevent too intensive farming.  It also has lead farmers to make other uses of their land like quad biking.

Subsidies are a payment that they are given per hectare of land depending on how its used.  This has lead to farmers planting the crop that gives the highest subsidy such as oil seed rape.

A tariff is a fee that has to be paid to import produce.  For example if an African farmer wants to send their wheat to the UK, they need to pay a fee to do so.  This is intended to mean that home farmers get a better deal.  But what it also means is that farmers in developing countries get a lower price for their farm produce.

The woodland grant scheme (now england rural development programme) gives money to help farmers convert some of their land into woodland.  This is to increase woodland for wildlife and reduce carbon dioxide.  It means that farmers in the UK are becoming less like farmers and more like guardians of the countryside.

The arable area payments scheme is similar to set aside, and it provides money to farmers to convert some of their producing land to natural land.

And finally quotas are limits set on farming.  The most common use is for fish farming; where it is used to prevent over-fishing to protect fish stocks from dying out (which they still are doing).  This is contraversial because fish farmers say it limits how much money they can make.  But the fact of the issue is that there will be no fish left to fish in the future without fishing quotas.

  3. quatas is a limit on a produce mainly on milk

set aside is when a farmer gets paid to leave his land and not touch or do anything to it

subsidies is money given to farmers and industries by the government

A tariff is a tax on foreign goods upon importation

Arable area payments is a Government scheme to reduce the over-production of crops through the provision of payments to farmers who remove areas of their land-holdings from agricultural production.

    gd luck

The English Woodland Grant Scheme (EWGS) is the Forestry Commission's suite of grants designed to develop the co-ordinated delivery of public benefits from England's woodlands.
