i need a sub. for shortening for a recipe

  1. Lard or butter.  If it is for cookies and you use just butter be wary they may spread a bit.


  2. A recipe for what?  Pie dough recipes often call for shortening (along with butter) which will make a more tender crust, but you can use all butter with no problem.

  3. You could use canola or vegetabe oil or butter. But don't use olive oil, it will give it a weird flavor.

  4. by shortening, I assume you mean Crisco.  You can substitute vegetable oil, margarine or butter - depending on what you're making.  Cookies with Crisco are fluffier & moister though;  cookies with butter spread more and are crisper
