Question:

Substitute for jello?

by  |  earlier

i like to bake, and there's a recipe i like to make that involves making a sauce with water, jello, sugar, and corn starch.

i'm a vegetarian so i can't eat jello, since it has gelatin in it.

is there anything else i could use that doesn't have gelatin?

or does anyone have any other ideas for the sauce?

i've used pudding before, but i want a syrupy sauce,

or jello-y sauce.

  1. its a powder, and as the person above said, its called Agar.

Im not quite sure where they sell it, but its called powdered agar, im not sure if it comes....un-powdered....but im sure you could go to the store, or look it up on the internet. Hope this helped!

  2. There is a vegan brand called Jel Dessert, and it comes in Orange, Cherry, Raspberry and Strawberry.  You can buy it at veganessentials.com

I agree that agar agar is a great substitute.  Agar is a tasteless dried seaweed that acts as a setting agent and is widely used in Asia. It is available in white translucent crinkly sheets, blocks, powder or brittle strands. When dissolved in water over low heat, it blends with the water and on cooling, sets into a jelly. Agar can be substituted for gelatin, but it has stronger setting properties (about 5 times greater); and unlike gelatin, agar will set at room temperature.  I found agar agar at health food stores and Asian food stores.
