i have a recipe for chocolate rice crispie treats but it calls for 1/2 cup of peanut butter. im making them for a kids party so i don't want to use the peanut butter (or any nut butter) but i dont want to leave it out all together because it might change the texture.(the chocolate might harden too much) any ideas on what i could use instead?

  1. My answer is a little more complicated but I believe it will create better results.

As you said you don't wish to use any product containing nut (so no nutella). I would look on the web for a choclate ganache recipe (basically chocolate and doulbe cream). When the ganache is made stir in the chocolate rice crispies (add a few raisins if you wish) and pour the mixture into a baking tray lined with baking parchment.

let that set then cut into bars using a sharp knife. Place on a wire rack and coat with a thin layer of chocolate which will set hard. making them easy to handle less messy.

Look for a ganache recipe to get the ratio of cream to chocolate right.

  2. if the recipe tells u to put a lot or chocolate in it then the peanut butter is, im guessing, so post to balance it out, just put 3/4 of what it says to put of chocolate but if its not a very strong tasting type of chocolate then just go with the original. it will taste fine with out peanut butter

  3. Use 2 1/4 cups miniature marshmallows to replace the half cup of peanut butter.  Melt them with the chocolate.

Many recipes for chocolate rice krispie treats tell you that's what to substitute, like this one:

    http://www.netcooks.com/recipes/Cookies/...

It says "1/2 cup peanut butter or you may prefer using 2 1/4 cups miniature Marshmallows".

Using more butter or shortening as has been suggested won't help bind the rice krispies together like peanut butter or marshmallows will. It will make it very greasy, instead.

  4. Nutella.  It's like a  hazelnut chocolate.

  5. Use butter.  Don't use Nutella obviously, it's made with nuts and that's what you're trying to avoid.

  6. Use 1/4 cup shortening. Peanut butter is half fat solids.

Solid shortening, not oil. Don't use butter or margarine either, as those contain mostly liquid and will make your recipe wet.

Add 1/2 teaspoon of some type of flavouring if you like to make up for the lack of peanut flavour in the recipe. Maybe vanilla.

As another poster suggests, you could just add more chocolate. Chocolate contains about the same amount of fat solids as peanut butter. The only drawback on this is that it will make the chocolate flavour overwhelming, but if you don't mind that then it is fine.
