  1. You become a substitute teacher by filling out an application, just like for any other job.  If they like your skills and qualifications, then a job interview would be scheduled.

Often districts do a police check to see if you have a criminal record.  You will have to sign "consent form" to have this done.

There often is a "workshop" for substitutes that you have to attend, before you will be "qualified" and called up, when they have any temporary vacancy.

Depending on the days, and hours that you can work, someone in personnel will phone you about 5:00 a.m in the morning, to offer you a temp job.  You can accept it, or not, then return to sleep, ha ha, if you got enough advance warning.

Some districts now have "on-line" system, whereby you can request certain days to sub, and a teacher or administrator can actually select you for that opening, on line, and you get email saying you were selected.

Being a "sub" often is hard, because you usually do not get much notice about when you'll work, or where.  Mess up there, and they likely will not have you back.

If you know anyone in the district or school where you'd like to work, then getting them to be a reference would help a lot.

  2. pretty simple, but, a word of advice.

    1. don't sub to sub, Sub where you want to teach. if you want to teach in the WHATSAMATTA School district, then sub there. You can learn about the school district and see if its a good fit.

    2. don't limit yourself. Putting your eggs in one basket is never a good idea. find a few districts you like and go for it.

Now, you want to be BUSY. you will sub in anything. if you limit yourself to elementary, you will get those type of sub jobs, but, this doesn't mean the some other sub jobs won't be offered. IE Subbing for the Spanish Teacher.

Fill out the applications. Be honest and things will work themselve out.

  3. Hi, I am a high school Government teacher and the way that this is done is you go to the administration office of the school system that you want and fill out an application and they will call you back for a interview, they check background checks and many other things so if you have had a serious offence chances are you are not going to get the job... have any more questions feel free to email me .

  4. I was just bores at my office job and saw you question and I happy you want to teach I did I loved it and you gave me the Idea to go and try to Sub myself

  5. You would go to the local board of ed and complete an application. They might do a background check and also you might have a one- or two-day workshop. You can specify what areas and levels you wish to substitute.

  6. Your best bet is to go to the district you want to do your student teaching in. That will look good on your resume when you apply for student teaching! Plus, I've heard that a lot of districts hire their student teachers for full-time positions!

Or you can always go to a place that sub-contracts teachers, but they take like $10 a day because they found you the job

    Hope this helps!

    Good Luck
