I have a question regarding the y=ax+b equation. I want to know if someone could please help me solve this using substitution and elimination. I am completely lost:

using substitution and elimination solve for the following:

1. y=ax+b

a= 0.20 , b= -0.04

2. y=ax+b

a= 1.14 , b= -2.45

-thanks

  1. I know for a fact when you use substitution, all you have to do is plug in the numbers for, let's say, A & B.  y= (0.20)x+ (-0.04)

    I can't remember what else to do and I dont really remember elimination sorry..

  2. 1. y=ax+b

    a= 0.20 , b= -0.04

    2. y=ax+b

    a= 1.14 , b= -2.45

    rewriting

    y = 0.2x - 0.04

    y = 1.14x - 2.45

    since we have y on one side of each, set them equal.

    0.2x - 0.04 = 1.14x - 2.45

    multiply by 100 to eliminate fractions

    20x - 4 = 114x -245

    combining terms

    114x - 20x = 245-4

    94x = 241

    x = 2.56

    y = 0.2x - 0.04

    y = 0.2(2.56) - 0.04

    y = 0.512 - 0.04 = 0.472

    check the arithmetic...
