Substitution and combination methods.?

ok so i have 2 questions on a review packet and i start school tomorrow and i allready have a test! i havent taken algebra in two years and i really need need some help.

can someone please explain to me step by step how to solve these two problems

Substitution

y=3x-5

y=4x

and linear combinations:

4x-2y=-2

x+2y=-3

  1. Substitution

    y=3x-5

    y=4x

    Since y = 4x, you can replace the y in the first equation:

    y=3x-5

    4x = 3x - 5

    Now solve for x.

    Once you have x, use the second equation to find y.

    ----------------------

    and linear combinations:

    4x-2y=-2

    x+2y=-3

    I think they mean to combine the equations.  Here is you add them together the y goes away and you get:

    5x = -5

    Now solve for x.  Then use that in one of the equations to find y.
