Question:

Subtitle options on Blue-ray?

Do Blue-ray disks have more language options? Since they have more storage space, I don’t see any reason why they can’t have subtitles for more languages. My wife is Japanese. She speaks English well, but it is hard for her to follow some movies in English, and regular DVDs usually only have a Spanish or French option. I’m mostly just looking for a reason to help convince my wife that we need to buy a Blue-ray player. I would really help to get her onboard if I could tell her that there will be Japanese subtitles.

  1. Yeah menu go to settings

it should have something like this

    English 7.1 DTS Master Audio

    French 7.1 DTS Master Audio

    Spanish 7.1 DTS Master Audio

    and so on.

    Just choose one.

Obviously the audio codec will be different (like for Juno, only english is in DTS master audio the other ones are not), but the other languages should still be audible.

    Example disc that I own

    Juno (2007)

English - 5.1 DTS HD Master Lossless Audio

    English - 5.1 Dolby Digital

    Spanish - 5.1 Dolby Digital

    French - 5.1 Dolby Digital

Subtitled in English, Subtitled in Spanish

The thing is, I have a region A disc, and it's only meant to be sold in United States/Canada (I think for Japan and Asia, although it's region A, a different manufacturing plant manufactures it so that's why they have a limited amount of languages.

I think if you buy your Blu-Rays from Japan it'll be subtitled in Japanese.

Get her to watch some Blu's at your local hifi shop, she won't be going back to standard def for sure. Just say  "it's a waste of a full hd tv if I don't get blu-ray."
