  1. 12 *5+5 = 65                    2*4+1 =9

        65-9 = 56

  2. A mixed number is a whole number added to a fraction, so:

    5 5/12 = 5 + 5/12

    and

    4 1/2 = 4 + 1/2

    Now we have:

    5 5/12 + 4 1/2 = 5 + 5/12 + 4 + 1/2

    = 9 + 5/12 + 1/2

    = 9 + 5/12 + 6/12

    = 9 + 11/12

    = 9 11/12

  3. 5 + 5/12  - 4 - 6/12

    1 + 5/12 - 6/12

    17/12 - 6/12

    11/12

  4. Basic Rule: You cannot add or subtract fractions unless they have the

    same denominator. No exceptions.

    For 5 5/12-4 1/2

    5 5/12=65/12

    4 1/2= 9/2

    So we now have 65/12-9/2

    9/2 X 6/6=54/12

    We now have 65/12-54/12

    And now we can subtract

    65/12-54/12=11/12
