  1. Simple Carbohydrates are aldehydes or ketones with multiple hydroxyl (OH alcohol) groups attached.  These monosaccharides are the subunits for Complex Carbohydrates (polysaccharides).

    Nucleic acids are composed of nucleotides.

    Proteins are made from amino acids.

    Lipids are a much stranger group of compound.  Some might say that lipids have fatty acids and glycerol in them, but this is only a part of lipids (usually called fats).  If you are taking a simple course in chemistry, then say that the subunits in Lipids are long chain carboxylic (fatty) acids and glycerol.

    The truth is that Fatty acyls, Glycerolipids, Glycerophospholipids, Sphingolipids, Sterol lipids, Prenol lipids, Saccharolipids and Polyketides are all lipids with a much more complicated structure.
