Those of you that are vegetarian, do you eat this? What other sandwich-based places sell veggie-related food?

  1. I eat there every now and then if I'm in a hurry and it's my only choice.

If you are one who is not afraid of cross-contamination, then you would be okay....but if the post above me makes you nauseous (as it did me), then you'd be safe to go elsewhere.

The only other option I can think of for you is Panera bread. They have a yummy Mediterranean vegetable sandwich. If you don't eat cheese, ask them to hold the feta. But the veggies are good and they have a nice hummus spread that they use as well.

  2. I wouldn't eat at Subway, sorry.

I worked there years ago, back when they still cut the bread the old way. I can tell you from experience that when there's a rush of customers, we hardly had time to change gloves until the rush was over. Also, our hands would handle meat and then dive into the bins with veggies. The roastbeef came slicked in blood, and that blood would get all over the gloves and then if you put your hand into where the veggies are, the blood gets in there. There is no requirement by Subway to change gloves between handling meat and veggies. Also, if you eat cheese, we almost ALWAYS put cheese on after putting meat on, therefore guaranteeing there was meat goop all over your hands by then.

Basically, there is not much you can do, since maybe 2% of Subway's customers order vegetarian meals, but 100% of customers expect fast service, so Subway made it into an automatic conveyor belt procedure of sorts, with a plug and chug mentality wherein you don't really have time or even want to change gloves or use a different knife or surface for non-meat meals. It won't be changed since Subway focuses on profit, and halting between every customer and changing gloves 100s of times a day just to appease the 1-2 veggie people that come in is not going to work.

I myself am a vegan and the very good chance that there is meat goop all over the veggies, employee's gloves, sandwich knives, the cutting boards, etc. makes me unwilling to eat there. When I worked there I was vegetarian, and my coworkers were strict Hindus that also didn't eat meat. None of us ate at Subway.
