Are are the subways or metro trains in Barcelona, Vienna, and Budapest compare to the metro in Paris.

  1. They're not quite as clean or as extensive, but they're cheaper and absolutely get you from point A to point B. I used buses a lot in Budapest to fill in the gaps that the subway didn't cover, and in Vienna I didn't really find them necessary, as sites were close together. The subway is useful in Barcelona, but the first time I was there I wanted to walk everywhere, because it's so beautiful.


  2. The metro in Paris is almost totally underground. The subways in Barcelona, Vienna, and Budapest are mixtures of underground, ground, above-ground trafic systems. The definition U-bahn or U-train as often used does not mean "U"nderground as in London but "U"nabhängig, which means independable of other traffic.
