  1. Anything is possible I suppose.  However, it might be helpful to know what impedance the sub is and how much power (rms) it's rated for.  Also, you'll want to know how much power your amplifier puts out at that impedance.  To complicate things further, how you set your gain can effect this scenario too.  If you set your gain properly and don't use a bunch of bass boost or sub EQing, that will help.  But, if your gain isn't set right, you use bass boost and and add extra eqing to try to get more bass out of your system, that will increase the odds of blowing the sub due to the increadible amounts of clipping you're sending to the sub.

  2. Maybe I looked up the rating of a lightning audio 12' and its 300Wrms /900Wmax.

  3. If you don't run the amplifier at 100% gain you'll be fine.  Sony Xplode amplifiers will RARELY get to 1000 watts at 100% gain anyway.

To tune it, turn the gain down all the way, listen to something with constant bass in it, and slowly turn the gain up until you hear a little bit of distortion, and back down until it disappears (you'll want to do this at the volume you'll usually be listening to it at)

  4. it depends on the rating for the speaker, if he is right you would blow it if you crank it up to high
