  1. If you are referring to ports on a subwoofer enclosure then you should know there is a LOT to those "holes".

A ported enclosure is going to be an enclosure that is tuned to a certain frequency.  What this frequency is depends on a couple of factors.  These factors are the internal volume of the enclosure, the cross sectional area of the port, and the length of the port.  When designing a ported enclosure it is vital that you know all of these dimensions.

To determine what size your port is you use the same factors as I said before.  You will start by determining what tuning frequency is correct for your setup.  This is found by either looking at what the manufacturer recommends or by using an enclosure designing program.  Once you've determined what tuning frequency and volume is best for your sub you need to figure out what size port will give you this tuning frequency.

A port with a small cross sectional area will mean that you will need a shorter port to get a desired tuning frequency.  The trade-off is that there will be a greater air velocity through the port.  This is bad because with powerful subs you will have port noise.  Port noise is something you will want to avoid.  In order to prevent port noise you need a larger cross sectional area.  This results in a longer port.  It takes some time to figure out what port size is best and most practical for your setup.

So as you can see there is a lot that goes into that little "hole" then what there seems.  Basically, unless you are experienced with building ported enclosure I highly recommend you have one custom made by a car audio shop.  They will have the know-how to design a box that will give you the best sound and work with your sub.

    Good Luck!!!
