Subwoofer connection...?

my subwoofer has the R, L/LFE connections while my receiver has the single sub-out connection - how much of a difference is there between connecting using a 'Y' cable to input to both the R and L connections on the sub as opposed to connecting only to the L/LFE connection?

Just from the labels - the sub manufacturer wants you to plug the single RCA cable into the "L/LFE" input.

Just use that and you would be fine.

Note: There is no danger in using a "Y" adapter on the end of the cable to fill both jacks on the subwoofer.  There is no power involved in these signals. Some people do this because they dont like leaving open RCA input jacks that might pick up noise.

If you do use a "Y" adaptor, get the slightly better ones that are shielded.

In terms of sound you'll not gain anything but in terms of equipment, though rarely, you might end up burning your amplifier.

If your reciever has single sub out connection, it usually has all the low frequency information (from all the speaker channels), so it doesn't make sense to use a 'Y' cable.

There should be no difference.  Your receiver will combine any left & right signals into that one sub out for you.  The sub combines the left & right into one speaker anyway.
