my subwoofer doesn't work, when the cone is pushed down a little it sorta tries to work, but it's heavily distorted. just wondering if anyone knows what the problem is, whether it's a burnt coil or the cone is damaged, etc. fuse is fine, gets power fine.

  1. Also, Dont push the cone down. Speakers do not work well when when you push the cones down. They need to vibrate.

If the speaker does not work when the cone is NOT pushed down then I would say the speaker is blown. Could also be a problem with the amp driving the sub woofer.

  2. If it sorta works when you push the cone down, it's time for a new speaker. Chances are real good that the voice coil is blown and you are mechanically forcing open voice coil wires back into contact with each other by displacing the cone. Her's a test you might want to do: Remove the old speaker and carefully connect the leads to a standard full-sized speaker. Keeping the volume very low, turn the unit on and start playing some music through it. What you should hear is all the low frequency stuff- but no popping, etc- and be sure the speaker cone on your test speaker doesn't try to suck down or push out from its frame when you first turn on the amp- if it does, the amp's gone too. Replacement speakers are often available from manufacturers, and if not, they often come in standard sizes. You may have to solder the new speaker to the old wire- sometimes they use lugs that slide onto the speaker though, or you can crimp some on, so it might be cake. If this sounds scary, it's probably best to enlist a tech buddy or to get a new sub- repair charges often exceed the value of a unit unless you can do some of it yourself.

  3. Sounds like you dont have enough power pushing it. You need to get a bigger amp....OR you could have it hooked up backwards....

  4. Check the polarity...The positive and negative wires might be reversed...
