Question:

Subwoofer plays a loud humming/buzzing sound and doesn't play any other sounds?

I got a 5.1 surround sound speaker system today, I have tried to connect it but it doesn't seem to work properly. Ive connected all the wires correctly and then I took out all the wires to see where the problem was, and when the subwoofer was turned on it played this humming/buzzing sound. It doesn't seem to play any sounds when I connect it to my dvd player.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

  1. buzzing sound is mostly associated with a grounded connection.

    1. try using another subwoofer speaker wire if possible, if issue stays the same,

    2. try sub on tape out. if buzzing sound is eliminated then,

    3. call your receiver's manufacturer to have them check the sub pre out terminal.

if however sub still gives the sound while using other terminals, and the sub wire is already replaced, then try sub on other avr's if you may...but guess you can have sub checked already.

  2. Consult your manual for your receiver.  Individual channels can be turned on/off on many receivers, and most come with a default of having only the two front channels on, with the others off.

  3. the only connection that you should have to make for the subwoofer to work,is a single cable going from the subwoofer output of your receiver to the sub. most receivers,if they are any good, have a setup program with on-screen display so that your system can be tested and set up properly. your owners manual should explain how to do this. i did it with my yamaha.  good luck.

  4. This may sound stupid but, you haven't mentioned the amplifier,, are you using an AV receiver or just plugging them into the DVD, if you are, you're doing it wrong. The speaker system needs an amp.
