Subwoofers AND AMP???

Ok so I bought the New MTX 2-Ohm 12 SledgeHammer Loaded Subwoofer Sub Box along with the Mtx TA4501 Mono Subwoofer Amplifier, descriptions of the amp is:

1500 Watts Output Power

Class D Operation

24dB per octave adjustable low pass crossover

1 Channel Operation

Frequency Response: 20Hz-20kHz

As for the woofers it says ''This 2-ohm enclosure handles 900 watts or 450 watts RMS of solid power'', I'm wondering if this is a good match without blowing my speakers?

  1. According to the MTX website that amp puts out 500 watts RMS at two ohms. You should be OK. Always use the RMS as a standard. The peak really isn't worth anything.

  2. output power is very misleading, companies use different ways to express it, so they can make it sound outrageous, depends if the 1500 watts is peak power, peak to peak power or RMS power, you want RMS thats a more accurate description of the true power and if the amp is stable at 2 ohms,  it should say either on the box or you can go to MTX website and find out, you should be allright as long as you dont crank the gain on the amp all the way up, in most cases over 70% gain on an amp is a waste, because the sound gets too distorted/ sounds fuzzy or crackles.

  3. Peak wil tell you nothing more that what that equpiment can take for a split second and nothing longer that than before it blows. Your RMS is the real wattage you want to look at, totally disregard peak power. The TA4501 amp was matched for the 12" sledge hammer loaded box, so there is no issues in that area. You will be fine.

Side note: All mono block amps are 2ohm stable, the tricky part is finding a 1ohm stable mono block in a reasonable price range.
