Subwoofers sound ****

I have a "the loudest" TL-1023 amp running two subs, both 10", one a sony 1200W and a kenwood 1000w. When I turn the volume up to low/mid level they produce a wierd/crappy flapping sound and don't produce much bass at all and continue to get worse the more power thats fed to them. I'm unsure as to whether they are blown because I have them both in a bodged enclosure there was originally housing two low powered 10" mutant subs, and I have literally taken a saw down the middle of it and used them as separate enclousures. The other point is that I had them both running of a 500W mutant amp before the TL-1023 so I don't think they could blow from that. The encloures themselves have two ports each and I think have a very small Cubic volume, so I probably answering my own question but would appreciate another opinion: is it the enclosure or the subs that need to be renewed? Cheers
