Success for Canada in the first match of International Volleyball Series
The Women’s National Volleyball Team of Canada clinched success in the opening match of four-game international series with Argentina.
The two sides had their first meeting on the evening of Thursday, June 23. The well arranged Investors Group Athletic Centre at the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg provided the ground for volleyball action. The home squad worked out great performance against
guest team from Argentina and held them off for a straight set victory.
Team Canada performed exquisitely well and posted 25-19, 31-29, and 25-20 in three respective sets. Nothing less was expected from the fine-tuned Canadian team, which spent plenty of time in practice and training for series against Argentina.
Canadian Team’s roster featured the following set of players:

Tricia Mayba Janie Guimond Tammy Mahon Claire Hanna   Dana Cranston   Carla Bradstock   Sarah Pavan   Marisa Field   Nadine Alphonse   Tasha Holness   Marie-Pier Méthot   Colette Meek   Lucy Charuk   Brittney Page Kyla Richey   Lauren O’Reilly   Elizabeth Cordonier
Match overview
Canadian team was equipped with lot of support from local fans and they opened the match with commanding serving. The early offensive attack by Canadian hitters put pressure on the visitors. Home side picked up lead and continued with the heavy strike of
volleys. First set reached its end, while Canada maintained the dominance. Argentina resisted but couldn’t save the opening set of the match.
Argentinean players put up a valiant effort in the second set and responded Canada’s strike. They formed good combinations and improve on reception. As a result, Argentina’s position in match got better. Pumped-up Canadian team was not ready to retreat;
they kept on hitting classical shots and remained ahead of opponents. Second set of the game saw many ups and downs but eventually hosts brushed aside Argentinean team.
Team Canada enjoyed the competitive edge in third set and controlled the operations. Argentina fought well but couldn’t penetrate the power of hard-spiking. They had to accept the better status of Canadian team anyway. Canada won the match and made a good
start in the campaign.
The mentor of the Canadian team, Arnd Ludwig was greatly pleased with his team’s act. He expressed his views after the match. He commented: “The team played well in the match. Although the second set was close, the team was able to hold it together and come
out on top.” Of the next three matches I am ready to tighten up play and ensuring we are ready for the Pan Am Cup.”
Top-scorer
In the top scorers’ category, Sarah Pavan of Canada settled for the 1st position. She played an instrumental role in the success of her team. Her convincing attack attempts and prolific display of game on the centre court enabled Canada to dominate the opponents.
Pavan was credited for her 19 kills. Likewise, Kyle Richie was equally active in the match. She contributed 11 kills and provided enough damage to the rivals. On the other hand, Argentinean Leticia Boscacci put up great struggle for her team. She raised her
team’s score with 10 kills.
The International Volleyball Series has a special purpose to serve. It will help the teams to get ready for the upcoming Pan American Cup Volleyball Tournament, which is scheduled to take place early July in Mexico. Canadian Women’s team is currently staying
at 20th position in the international ranking, while Argentina is at 25th. Both teams are confirmed for the Pan Am Cup. The on-going four-game series is great chance for players to hone their skills and gain competitive international experience before the
start of challenging multi-nation tournament.
