Successful trades in the history of Major League Baseball
The MLB has seen many trades that have taken place dating back into the history. Some of the trades resulted in being successful for teams and went on achieving glory, some were unaffected by the trades and some trades resulted in teams getting affected quite negatively. Some of the top deals that MLB teams managed to pull off would be under discussion here.
The trade of Steve Carlton could be regarded as one of the most successful trades achieved by the Philadelphia Phillies. Carlton had seven seasons at the Cardinals where he wasn’t successful. However, after the disappointment in the 1970 season after losing 19 games, the player managed to put up a 20 game winning season in 1971. The Cardinals immediately traded him to the Phillies which began an era of dominance for the player. With the Phillies, this phenomenal player managed to record 241 victories and four Cy Young Awards by taking part in 15 seasons as a Phillies team member.
In order to rotate their players and in hope of giving other players more chances to play, the Rangers sold Adrian Gonzalez to the San Diego Padres. He was amongst the starters for the Rangers but due to various tactics, Gonzalez was traded. The superb player got the stage that he needed with the small Padres team and managed to clinch 11wins in back-to-back seasons. Part of the trade also moved Chris Young from the Rangers to Padres who benefited more comparing the two as he became a solid number two pitcher. Gonzalez also developed into one of the power hitters in MLB and became the first draft pick in 2000.
Another amazing deal that Minnesota was able to manage against the Marlins was the trade of John Santana. John Santana in his first three seasons at Minnesota managed a 12-3 record as a swingman. The talented and young player managed to appear on 45 occasions out of which 18 were starts. The next season saw him take home one of his two Cy Young Awards. Santana improved steadily and went on to win 93 games in 8 seasons to become one of the top pitchers in the MLB.
As soon as the NY Met acquired Keith Hernandez, he put up performances that made the team better by quite a lot. This player improved his performance through hard work which produced great results not only for him but also for the team. The extravagant player managed a place in the top eight positions in his first three seasons as a player for the Mets in the MVP voting. The highlight of the splendid player’s career could be the 1986 and 1989 years. The year 1986 witnessed Hernandez and Gary Carter being the key to success of the World Series win. In 1989, this legend of the game managed to secure the Golden Glove in each of his five seasons in NY.
One of the biggest moves in Major League Baseball materialised when Cecil Cooper was traded to the Milwaukee Brewers from the Red Sox. Though Cooper was a well established player for the Red Sox, he surely had something more to offer to MLB. With the player moving to the Brewers, his scoring abilities increased each time he went out to bat. His fabulous technique enabled him to score more than 100 runs at four different times.
Nolan Ryan was traded to the Los Angeles Angels from the Mets. Ryan was one player who had the ability to rise to the top and was surely to shine. Ryan presented the Mets with loads of raw talent, but after he was traded to the Los Angeles Angels, he emerged as one the top players in the LA team. Ryan managed to win 14 games on six occasions and also went through two seasons in which he managed to record 20 plus wins. Along with this, Ryan managed to establish himself as one of the most dominating players in the majors and secured six strikeout titles in eight glorious years. The splendid player also managed over 300 hitters on five times.
