Secretary Rice would become President in the admittedly unlikely event of the deaths of the President, VP, Speaker of the House and President pro tempore of the Senate. What do Americans think about such an undemocratic possibility?

  1. The list of succession is a list of TEMPORARY PRESIDENTS. The 25th amendment to the US Constitution explains how the gap is permanently filled. The Senate of the USA selects a Vice President  who  fills the vacant post of President, where upon, the Senate then fills the vacant office of the Vice President. Ms. Rice would be an Acting President until the US senate meets to fill the 2 vacant posts.

    Just read the 25th Amendment to the US Constitution it explains the whole situation. Hope that helps. Packers.

        * Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice

        * Secretary of the Treasury Henry Paulson

        * Secretary of Defense Robert Gates

        * Attorney General Michael Mukasey

    The line of Presidential Succession has been changed three times since the country was founded.  What's so undemocratic about it?

  4. Democracy does not mean absolute Athenian democracy on all issues all the time.  So an unelected Presdient could succeed to the office for a limited period of time.  Its happened before with Gerald Ford and he was a decent and honest person who did the best he could for a period of time and then democratic elections provided a new president.  Nothing undemocratic about it.

  5. The prez appoints the Courts too, is that unamerican?
