My boyfriend asked for two golf clubs for his birthday, I can't remember what they are exactly. Is there such things as a 5 iron and 3 wood?

  1. Yes.  An iron is a club with an iron face and generally allows the ball to have more loft "time in the air" than a wood.  They come in everything from a 1 iron (rare) to the common set starting at around 3 or 4.  The set usually extends to the 9 iron and includes a ptiching wedge.  Sometimes, you may want/need a sand wedge (or additional wedge) as well.  The number in front of the word is a good indicator about the expected distance that you'll hit it.  If you can hit a 9-iron 90 yards, you should be able to hit a 3-iron about 170+ yards.

Woods are kind of odd because the club faces were originally made of wood, but are now made from some of the coolest alloys around.  They tend to have a big head and are excellent for getting the ball down the course without getting too much air time.  Expect about 200+ yards with a 3-wood for a mildly experienced player.

Ok...so here's what you need to know:

    1. What kind of clubs does he like?  Some brands a very high end while others are not as expensive or finely tuned.  If he has a Wilson set and you buy him the top of the line Ping/Taylor Made/etc. clubs, he will worship you.  If you buy him less than what his basic set is, he will probably find the club pretty useless and leave it in the bag.

    2. Do his current clubs have graphite shafts or metal shafts?  If they are metal, the will have a polished, silvery finish; graphite shafts won't.  Whatever he has now, get that for him in his new clubs unless he specifically asked for a certain shaft.

    3. Does he have a good friend that he plays with?  If so, can he tell you anything about which club he really wants?

If you have to choose ($$), get the 3 wood.  Get him one of those fancy metal alloy 3 woods and I'm sure he'll be happy.

  2. Ask him again, also ask him to be specific.  Because if you do a little research, the limits are endless as far as choices.  Youre going to be asking more questions.  Save your time, ask him exactly what he wants, You and He will be happier in the end

  3. yess. but the thing is there are 3 and 5 irons, and 3 and 5 woods, and the two are completely different types of clubs

most likely he wanted the woods because the irons come as a set

  4. I would never ask my girlfriend to buy me a golf club, as she does not know what I would want.  And in your case, this is exactly the issue, as you can't tell apart 5 iron and a tire jack.

So go and tell him to choose the clubs, after which you pony up at the check out.

Or better yet, give him a gift card so he can buy the clubs himself.  Be prepared to pay 400 dollars for the gift card.

Or another alternative is to get him something else for his gift (whatever the occassion is), and let him buy his own stuff.

It's kinda unusual to dictate what kinda gift one should be receiving.

I would just be happy if my girlfriend gives me a gift, just as I expect her to be happy if I were to give her a pair of jeans for her birthday.  It's the thought that matters.

  5. Yes

  6. yes there is such thing as that. they would usually just come in a set of golf clubs

  7. There is such a thing as 5 iron and a 3 wood...however there is also a 5 wood and a 3 iron..

a full set of clubs usually contains Irons numbered 3-9 He probably has a pitching wedge and a sand wedge also

Then for woods most people have a 1 wood 3 wood 5 wood and maybe a 7 wood
