Sudbury Wolves of Ontario Hockey League wins the Junior Club Ice Hockey World Cup
Sudbury Wolves, a Canadian team which plays in the Ontario Hockey League defeated Chicago Blackhawks of United States Hockey League (USHL) in the finals to win the Junior Club Ice Hockey World Cup. Wolves defeated Blackhawks by 2 goals to nil to win the
title.
This was the first time that teams from North American featured in the tournament, which involves best eight junior teams from all over the world. The tournament was played in Omsk Arena in Russia.
Both teams tried their best to win the final match of the tournament and did not allow each other to score in the first period of the match. The scores remained 0-0 at the end of second period as neither Sudbury nor Blackhawks’ team was able to break the
deadlock.
8th minute into the last period, Canadian side finally broke the deadlock as they scored through Josh Leivo, Toronto Maple Leaf’s third round pick of the 2011 NHL draft, selected at 86th. Leivo finished the tournament as the leading
scorer with six goals, five assists and 11 goals.
Just few seconds after first goal, Sudbury doubled their lead as defenseman Frank Corrado scored to give Wolves the lead that they kept till the end of the match. Corrado was also a part of 2011 NHL draft as he was selected at 150th in the fifth
round by Vancouver Canucks.
Mark Burgess, the owner of Sudbury Wolves was very happy on his team’s success and thinks that it was a challenge to win here. Talking to R-Sport, he hoped that they would be able to come back next year and will defend their title successfully, as he said,
"To win here was a real challenge for us. We really want to come back here next year to defend our title."
Their head coach Trent Cull praised some of his players, including the goaltender Taylor Dupuis. Cull was very happy with Dupuis’ performance as he said,
"I thought Taylor Dupuis really kept us in there today and he was our best penalty killer. He made some big stops and showed us what he can do."
