Question:

Sudden Slurred Speech?

The other day I was shopping with my husband, when all of a sudden as I was talking to him from down a shopping aisle, my speech became slow, and slurred. I would stop and restart the sentence and it would still be slurred. My tongue felt numb, and I felt very "out of it". I am only 23 but I do have a form of heart disease and some history of other medical issues (heart murmur) etc.

Should I be seriously worried?

  1. Sudden slurred speech could be a sign of a Transient ischemic attack or so called mini-stroke. Given the history of heart disease- a murmur, I would be concerned about some thrombotic event or a circulatory problem as the cause. You should be checked by your primary care doctor asap. You may need a carotid ultrasound and a visit with the cardiologist. This episode should be taken seriously even in a 23 year old.

  2. sounds like a TIA - a transient ischaemic attack.  In other words a mini stroke.  See someone asap.

  3. Yes you should be concerned. You should see your doctor ASAP (today or tommorrow) to determine what the underlying issues are, and how they can be treated before something more serious such as a stroke occurs which might leave you with permanent problems.

  4. I believe those are 2 of the signs of a stroke/seizure.  those things happen when your brain hiccups.  You may have had a minor one.  I would go check with a real doctor in person...not this site.
