Question:

Sudden bright red blood 10 days postpartum?

My discharge has been very light these last few days until today, now it's bright red and heavier than it was. I've filled 2 always ultra overnight pads in the last 4 hours (overflowed 1 of the pads).

I left a message for my doctor, and am waiting on his call, I just wanted to see if others had this happen and if it's normal.

I might be paranoid, but I guess that's better than letting trouble brew.

Thanks ahead of time :)

  1. i think you should go to your local urgent care center or hospital it is always better to be safe than sorry ..........good luck :)

  2. I bleed  really bad with my first thought i was going to bleed to death it would just pour and then it finally stopped i don't know if it was because i started to have him normal then had to have a c-sec but my daughter i hardly bleed at all.  everything turned out fine for me but you might want to get checked out i know it normal to start and stop after having a baby even up to 6 weeks.  But if you are extremely concerned contact your doctor or even go to the E.R.  Good Luck

  3. I think the rule is, if you are soaking a pad in an hour or less, go to the hospital.  If you have really bad cramps, and the bleeding, go to the hospital.  If this doesn't pass soon, go to the hospital, don't wait for your dr.

  4. Your doc will probably want to see you asap... I had a similar situation and because of the 4 degree tear (into the pooper) and all that is in there he checked everything was fine but I did require an antibiotic just to help the uterus get back to the right size -- Bright Red is always much more conserning than the Dark red.

    Take care and let us know.

  5. your flow will come and go light and heavy for a month or two and sometimes it will be real dark cause its old blood and sometimes when real heavy it will be brighter because new blood you should be worried if you have lots of swelling in ur legs

  6. I had the same thing happen.  I'm not sure what the problem was but it ended up going away.  I hope everything is ok for you.

    Good idea calling the doctor.  You never can be too careful.  Good luck with the new baby.

  7. It is good that you contacted your doctor. I would also tell you that if you fill up more than one pad an hour, you need to go to an ER pronto! (Regular pads, not the overnights)  You seem to be on the cusp of going to the hospital because you said you used the ultra overnight pads and those hold the most. I really don't think you should be getting bright red blood at the moment. If you are feeling weak or lightheaded get someone to take you to the ER.

    EDIT:

    Warning Signs

    Typically, lochia is not the result of any health complication and will end on its own when your body is ready. However, some women do experience problems with their postpartum bleeding. If you experience any of the following signs, call your health care provider or visit your nearest emergency room:

        * bright red discharge for more than seven days after birth

        * discharge that smells bad

        * fever and chills

        * abnormally heavy bleeding (in which a maxi pad is soaked in less than one hour)

  8. Have you been doing a little more than usual today? I could tell that I was trying to do too much after the birth of my 3 kids when I started to bleed heavier than normal.

    But it's never a bad idea to ask your doc.
