Sudden rainfall inundates Miami Marlins' new ballpark as roof remains open - MLB Update
Out of the blue torrential rainfall occurs and the Miami Marlins’ officials fall short of acting upon the forecasts. It was for the first time that the Marlins ballpark did not see their roof closing as rain came down.
Time the officials took to trigger the roof and keep the rain out was too long and water was mounting across knees, not far away from the Marlins’ dug-out and around the seating of the fans.
Thankfully incident took place at a time when there were sufficient numbers of hours remaining before the start of the game. That became a blessing for the officials who were to come under heavy criticism if rain had actually resulted in postponement or
anything else with the game.
For some, it invoked memories of the Marlins’ old ballpark, Sun Life Stadium. Just how it used to soak the field and trigger actions from the management, something similar was there to see at their new ballpark on Wednesday.
Marlins executive vice president of operations, Claude Delorme came up with an explanation. Terming the incident a rarity, he believes, it will help them operate better next time. Every experience which turns out an innocuous one should be taken as a blessing
in disguise, he hinted.
“With this weather, and we saw it at [the team’s previous home] Sun Life Stadium, you do get surprises. The cells — one minute there’s nothing — and then all of a sudden it turns on you. I’m glad it happened now. The worst thing is if the roof was open and
it happened a half-an-hour before the game. Three hours before the game we can deal with,” he stated.
Delorme rightly pointed out, had ballpark inundated due to rain for a few hours before the start of the game, it will have been extremely difficult to wipe the water out of the park.
Wherever in the world roof retractable ballparks are constructed, it takes a couple of years before fruits are enjoyed fully. Similar is going to happen with the Marlins new ballpark.
Experiences gained through little hiccups like what happened on Wednesday become a source of eventual infallibility of the purpose, for which the ballpark is built.
