I just turned 22 is this has really been freaking me out! I'm a vegetarian, but for about a month now, I've been mostly keeping to a vegan diet. I just ordered some books on veganism but I was just wondering if my bone health (because I'm drinking soy milk) is being affected by my new diet because my bones have never ever ever cracked in the past!!! I'm physically fit and vibrant!

  1. I suffer from the same problem and ive been told cod liver oil is the best thing.. I dont know how strongly you feel about avoiding fish so no offence ment if caused. If this has come on suddenly and the only thing to change is your diet then i would say you've cracked it.

  2. It has nothing to do with your new diet.  You couldn't go from having good bones to bad ones in 1 month.  That's just impossible.

Soy milk has all the same nutrients as milk.  I have been vegan for a year and my bones aren't cracking.

This sounds like trolling if you ask me.

  3. There is very little you can do with a diet in one month that can affect your joints.

Its likely to be something else - exercise / tiredness / rundown etc

If you really are concerned, there are pleny of veggie options for loose joints, there is no need to revert to a fishy diet as described somewhere above.

Exercise with strengthen your muscles and tighen the joints, that'll probably do it.

  4. Few week ago I also experience pain at joints at the leg.

So now I am taking bio-Calcium pills.

  5. Depends what your new diet is. If you are doing veganism correctly you will not have any health problems what so ever. Soy milk does not cause bone problems, whereas cows milk in most people do. Learn about vegan nutrition and make sure you are getting your nutrients. And if you are not drinking milk or consuming any animal products and getting nutrients from plant sources, you should have no health or bone problems. If that is the case then you might want to go to the doctor it could be totally unrelated to your new diet and something more serious.

  6. The best thing to do whether veg*n or not is to take 1000 IU of Vitamin D each day. That's the vitamin most responsible for bone health and numerous others such as cancers, MS, muscle aches, fatigue, diabetes, depression and a few others.

It's the sunshine vitamin but if we wear sunscreen, work inside, live in shady cities, or live in places farther from the ecuador (this is especially an issue in the fall and winter months), have darker skin and/or don't get out during the peak hours of 10am to 3pm, we have a hard time making enough for our bodies. Milk is fortified (basically a supplement wrapped up in food) but doesn't give enough. In this case the RDA is considered too low and is being reevaluated.

Truthfully, those who consume a lot of animal products have more issues with bones because the acidity of the high protein diet causes calcium to be leached from the bones to make the blood alkaline. This causes issues for the kidneys as well.

Soy, and other legumes, as well as green leafy veggies, figs, seaweeds, seeds and nuts can also be good sources of Calcium.

Cod Liver Oil has quite a bit of vitamin D and is taken in a lot of Nordic countries which do have very dark winters. But there are vegetarian and vegan sources (milk is supplemented with the sheep lanolin source).

The more physically fit you are, especially with weight-bearing exercises such as running and walking, the stronger your bones are likely to be.

  7. iron pills are good to help with this

  8. Popping joins is caused by loose joints. You need to work on your muscles. It can also be caused by cartilage loss in which case it's irreversible.
