Sue Bird leads the way as Seattle Storm thump New York Liberty 84-66 – WNBA Recap
Sue Bird carried the Seattle Storm with 18 points and 10 assists as they beat New York Liberty 84-66 on Sunday night to put an end to their three game losing streak.
Lauren Jackson also had a good game with 16 points while Camille Little scored 15 points and Shekinna Stricklen chipped in with 12.
While the Storm had four players scoring in double figures, Liberty only had to rely on Cappie Pondexter for most of their scoring. She contributed a game high 23 points on a 9 of 17 shooting night.
Seattle won the game easily due to their immaculate shooting - 50% from the field - while holding New York to only 38.2%. Another factor that worked in their favour was the initial burst, as they started out with a 12-2 run.
Seattle then ended the first period with a 7-2 run, which was capped off by a buzzer beating three-pointer from Thompson to make it 28-9.
While the Seattle team scored at will, New York struggled to find their mark throughout the period mainly due to Storm’s sturdy defence which forced Liberty to commit 8 turnovers in the period. The proceedings of the second quarter
saw New York try their best to make their way back into the game but Seattle were up to the task and outscored their opponents 23-21 in the period.
A strong 11-4 start to end the second stanza allowed Seattle to stay in control of the game as they took a 51-30 lead into the interval.
The third quarter was another closely fought affair as both teams tried their best to outmanoeuvre each other. New York came out top in the period having outscored Seattle 16-14. However Seattle’s lead was a bit too much to turn
over and even a 10-0 run to close out the third stanza was not enough as New York still trailed 46-65.
In the last quarter, Seattle opened up with a 10-2 run and took a 75-48 lead in the ball game. New York were not going out easy as they responded back with a 10-2 run of their own, however matter how hard they tried, Liberty were
not able to make their way back into the game.
