Sugar Ray: Amir Khan needs to have ‘ruthless aggression’ to beat Peterson – Boxing News
American retired professional boxer Sugar Ray Leonard has a piece of advice for the former unified WBA (Super) & IBF Light Welterweight Champion Amir Khan. According to Sugar, Khan needs to be way more aggressive than he has ever been to beat Lamont Peterson
in his rematch whcih is scheduled for May 19 at the Mandalay Bay Resort in Las Vegas.
In his recent interview, Sugar Ray said, “First off, it was a fight where everyone thought Khan would win easily. I did too. But the fight became closer than we expected. Khan is so talented... He has the whole package. First of all, he can fight and he’s
a good-looking kid. He has it all, but he has to put it to use.”
Ray was all praise for Khan but he did mention that Khan needs to be more careful now since Peterson already knows what Khan can come up with. Praising Khan’s skills, he said, “(Khan) needs to be more aggressive and more active.” He also rated himself as
someone who is “impressed with (Khan’s) artillery.” Lastly, talking about the rematch, Ray said, “I think it will be a better fight, a more action-packed fight.”
Since this will be Khan’s last chance to get back the titles he once unified, Khan should be in the best of his forms. His trainer, Freddie Roach said last week that he has a better plan for Khan this time. According to the Hall of Famer, Khan will not be
using the ropes this time, instead he will be in the middle of the ring fighting Peterson like never before.
Khan lost his titles to Peterson in December last year in a controversial decision, which not only irked the former champion but also his fans around the globe. Khan then went onto to appeal against the decision with the IBF and he succeeded in getting an
immediate rematch. However, Khan wanted to go further and get the decision reversed which did not seem like a possibility. Khan’s camp soon withdrew the petition and settled the scene out of court by convincing Peterson to a rematch.
