Sugar Ray Leonard says it will be a shame if Pacquiao-Mayweather bout never happens – Boxing news
The legendary American boxer, Sugar Ray Leonard, who is a former five-weight class champion and 1976 Olympic gold medallist, believes it would be a shame if people do not ever see a super-fight between Manny ‘Pac-Man’ Pacquiao and Floyd ‘Pretty Boy’
Mayweather.
Leonard, who is more commonly known as Sugar, knows Pacquiao versus Mayweather is one of the most eagerly awaited fights in the sport.
“It will be a shame, really, if they do not ever fight,” Leonard told Michael Marley of Examiner.com.
The Fighting Pride of Philippines, Pacquiao, is an eight-division world champion and the current World Boxing Organisation Welterweight World Champion (Super Champion) whereas the undefeated American legend, Mayweather, on the other side is a five-division
world champion and the current World Boxing Council World Welterweight Champion. Therefore, Leonard admitted both Mayweather and Pacquiao have done a lot for the sport.
However, Leonard in the end stated even if Pacquiao-Mayweather bout does not happen still they will always be considered as two of the best boxers of the game.
“It's not their fault that they have not fought and it won't be if they don't but...they are the top two guys and they have lifted their divison over other weight classes. There's no other fighters out there with what these two have, their gifted attributes,”
he said.
The Filipino star, Pacquiao, who has won 53 of his 58 professional fights (2 Draws), with 38 of them coming by the way of a knockout, is currently set to face the Mexican Dinamita, Juan Manuel Marquez, in a much-anticipated bout on November 12, 2011
at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Many think Mayweather and Pacquiao will come close after this fight.
Therefore, let’s see if both fighters somehow sign a contract, as their bout will certainly have all the hallmarks of being an absolute classic.
Moreover, their fight will also have the potential of breaking all the grossing records in the sport so far.
