Sugar Ray Robinson is widely regarded at the greatest fighter pound 4 pound. While I agree with this completely, Name 10 fighters who might have had the best chance against the Prime Ray. Prime Ray lost only once. Lamotta won 1 out of 6 (Ray spotted him 9.5 lbs). The other losses were post prime. Anyone else have a shot? Welter or Middle

  1. hands of stone

  2. #1Carlos Monzon #2 Roy Jones #3 Marvin Hagler Erik youra n swer is inconsistant to the answer yesterday with Harry Grebb!!

  3. not many could have beaten robinson in his prime id go with a prime marvin hagler

  4. I can think of only a handful of fighters that could give him real trouble in the ring

marvin hagler: In my opinion Hagler is the best middleweight of all time his strenght and perseverance were surpassed only by his courage he had power,he had a good chin and he had pretty good skills to match, i think he deserved a rematch against leonard but unfortunately he never got one, anyways, he could definetely give Robisnon trouble and even beat him although this would be probably the toughest fight ever in the history of boxing and a nightmare for judges because both fighters were formidable in their primes, however hagler had a habit of trading punches in corners and often ended up caught up in flurries, even though these things rarely happened, when they did they always affected him in score cards, however he definetely had the tools to defeat Robinson at middleweight.

Carlos Monzon: He is the other greatest middleweight and absolute beast in the ring,he was a nightmare for opponents and an extremely aggressive fighter that could give anyone h**l in the ring, in his prime he could have gone against any middleweight including Robinson and could have given sugar ray robinson one h**l of a fight, this would be a fight i would pay to watch.

Charley Burley: In my opinion Burley ought to be rated higher than where he is, he was a complete fighter who could very well beat robinson, and claimed the title of greatest ever, unfortunately the times he lived in prevented this from happening, but i strongly believe that if anyone had a definite chance of beating ray robinson it would be him.

Harry Greb: At middleweight he was just unbeliavable he had a very tough level of competition in his day and if he faced robinson at middleweight he definitely had the chance of wiinning.

Stanley ketchel: NEVER bet against stanley ketchel if he is fighting at middleweight, this guy fought and beat heavyweights in his prime (except johnson of course)

non pareil jack dempsey: I haven t seen many of his fights but his record impresses me a lot he could go against robinson at middleweight and give him h**l.

Roy Jones: In his prime jones seemed unbeatable, he was so good that he made everyone else look bad, his hand speed was amazing and his reflexes rivaled those of some marvel superheroes in his prime he could have gone against the best middleweights ever (this guy was heavyweight champion at some point for God's sake!).

these are the guys i could think of, the others were to iffy to be included on this list.

  5. The Heat did when he fought Joey Maxim.

  6. ray is comsidered the best welter and middleweight of all time, having said that, the following in their respective primes may have had a slim chance:

henry armstrong (when they did fight, henry was past his prime)

roy jones jr (his speed was blinding, but his chin may not have been up to the job....and what might have happened if robinson cornered him, or clocked him?).

charley burley (some say robinson avoided this "best boxer never to win a world title" candidate!).

kid gavilan (although robinson beat him twice, they were extremely close, and if they had fought a few times more, the kid might have got one of them, as la motta did).

marvin hagler / carlos monzon ( both of these may have had a chance against a 1950 robinson).

  7. 1. marvin hagler, 2. bernard hopkins, 3. carlos monzon, 4. emile griffith, 5. d**k tiger, 6. jermain taylor, 7. rodrigo valdez, 8. kelly pavlik, 9. nino benvenuti, 10. vito antuofermo

  8. I think of the modern fighters, Roy Jones Junior in his prime would have had the best chance against Sugar Ray Robinson.  Roy had speed and quickness like no one before or since, and you can't beat what you can't hit.

Back in the day, Marvin Hagler might have duplicated Jake Lamatta's effort and would have had an outside chance to beat Ray.

In Robinson's prime, Joey Maxim wouldn't have been able to catch Ray, age was more of a factor in Robinson's loss to Maxim than ability.  The same could be said for modern fighters of note like James Toney, Robinson's movement would give them loads of trouble.

At the lower weights, Duran was a force comparable to Lamatta, and Bernard Hopkins could possibly have duplicated the performance of Randy Turpin, but these greats would be long shots to beat Robinson.  They could do it, but it would be unlikely.

  9. Marvin Hagler
