  1. Good question.  Leonard and Mayweather Jr are fairly even in speed.  Leonard has the edge in power.  Both are excellent defensively.  During his career, Leonard fought againt the tougher opposition fighting people like Hearns, Duran, Benitez, and Hagler.  Mayweather did beat Hatton and De La Hoya to his credit.  I believe that this fight would be fast paced with Leonard being more of the aggressor and landing the sharper and harder punches.  Mayweather would fight back hard with flurries but Leonard would answer with flurries of his own making Mayweather Jr. get on his bicycle and into a defensive shell.  In the 10th round, Leonard would catch Mayweather Jr. with a dazzling combination and send him to the canvas.  Mayweather Jr. would get to his feet but the referee would halt the contest and raise Leonard's hand in victory.

  2. Great question, keep in mind that the speed advantage is really no advantage in this fight, they both have great hand speed......................................

    Defensively Mayweather is better.....................................

But Ray Leonard punched harder and he didn't have problems with his hands, the way Floyd injures his hands after almost every fight.

And last but not least- The HEART factor Leonard had an indomitable spirit, when the fight got tough Leonard dug deep and found a way to WIN........................................

Proving his Greatness with victories over some of Greatest fighters of ALL TIME!

    1. Hearns

    2. Duran- twice

    3. Hagler- and yes he out-pointed Hagler

    4. Benitez

Mayweather has yet to prove he is truly great!- He has to fight Cotto!

When you add it all up it amounts to Leonard by Split Decision!

  3. leonard

  4. from everything ive seen sugar ray is a more accomplished fighter. hes beaten the best competition of his time. and mayweather continues to fight the biggest paycheck. i say sugar ray would but maybe after i see mayweather fight a cotto or a margorito i may change my opinion.

  5. leonard is much stronger at 147, and quicker, so sugar ray by unanimous decision.

  6. Leonard was Mayweather with much more power and aggressiveness. Leonard KO's Mayweather in round 11.

  7. Chris I have to agree.  I watched both of these guys in their prime and I would give the edge to Mayweather Jr.  The reason being that as good as Ray was, Mayweather is faster, better defensively and can punch better than people give him credit for.  Take the Gatti, Mitchell, Corrales, Hernandez, and Hatton fights and wait to see what he does when he fights Cotto.  People base opinions on one fight and that is a huge mistake. So what if Floyd didnt impress against DLH or Castillo.  They were quality guys and he beat them both. Ray didnt always look great either. I think it may have been a close fight but I dont think we've seen Floyd have to dig deep yet but thats not his fault.  Floyd by unpopular but fair decision.

  8. Wish Ray could lose some years to actually fight this one.  Mayweather several months ago got in Leonard's face and said Leonard would never been a match for him.  I'm not a big Leonard fan either but I definitely think he carried himself better than Mayweather is now.  This would be a close fight but based on who they have fought, Leonard by far has faced the tougher fighters.  I have Leonard winning this one by close decision.

  9. This won't be a popular opinion, but I truly believe that Mayweather is a better fighter than Leonard.  (Personally, I was never much of a SRL fan). . . . Leonard relied too heavily upon psyching-out his opponents, and I think Mayweather is too dumb to be psyched out.

  10. I love Floyd, but if an older De la Hoya and limited Jose Luis Castillo can fight Floyd to split decisions the Ray Leonard, maybe one of the best "big fight" boxers of all-time would be able to find a way to win.

Floyd may actaully be a bit more skilled, but Ray was physically stronger and just as fast, if not faster. I just don't see Ray losing, having stood up to Hagler, Hearns and Duran I don't think Mayweather's punching power would bother him, he's beat defensive genius Wilfred Benitez - he can adjust mid-fight like no other....he may be the most battle tested fighter anyone young enough to use yahoo has ever seen.

Ray would be too fast, skilled and busy, I would take Leonard in a 12 round decision. In a 15 rounder, I go for Leonard UD, although if there is a KO, I would bank on it to happen in round 14 or 15.

  11. Floyd Mayweather is not in the same class as Sugar Ray Leonard. You only have to look at one fight to know what kind of fighter Ray was . The first Ray Leonard and Thomas Hearns fight after Ray was almost blinded and hurt badly in the 14th round and losing the fight I have never seen a fighter come back against another great fighter and win by KO.Mayweather is not aggressive enough to fight in this fashion. The big difference is Ray could box and fight Mayweather can only box. Hand speed goes to Ray Leonard size goes to Ray Leonard quality of opponits goes to Ray big money fights goes to Ray Leonard Olympic Gold MEDAL Ray winner Mayweather losser trainer Angelo Dundee Ray TRAINER MAYWEATHERS UNCLE FOOT SPEED Ray.iT,S HARD TO BE A DEFENCEIVE FIGHTER WHEN YOUR A FIGHTER WINNER BY KNOCK OUT IN THE 10TH ROUND rAY lEONARD

  12. i really, really like the Sugar Ray Leonard but in watching his fights as entertaining as they were, he threw a lot of pitter patter punches similar to that of De La Hoya. Sugar also put himself into situation that were bad for him as in his fight with Roberto Duran. I think Floyd's discipline, ring smarts and most of all his ring generalship would have made him the victor in this match-up. Floyd does great against opponents that constantly come forward and i don't think Sugar would dance with him because he would want to entertain the crowd and in coming forward he would put himself in trouble against the counter-punching jedi-master that is Floyd Mayweather.

  13. Leonard, hands down. He fought people like Tommy Hearns, they just don't make fighters like that any more, also, Sugar Ray is simply tenaciuos, he would never quit, when he fought Hearns he lost every round except the last one and he eneded up knocking Hearns out, no small task to lay down the hit man. Im not taking anything away from Mayweather, he is a great fighter in his own right, but simply not in the same class as Sugar Ray Leonard.
