I'm a homeschooled to-be-10th grader, and I am my own teacher (with a little help from my mom). As I am planning my 10th grade curriculum, I would appreciate any suggestions for reading. Is there anything that is commonly required in schools? I enjoy adventure, mysteries, and anything original, unpredictable, or involving animals. I refuse to read overly-romantic books, or anything with a predictibal plot.

Thanks a lot!

  1. To Kill a Mockingbird

    Bless Me, Ultima

    Julius Caesar

    House on Mango Street

The Iliad and The Odyssey (if you didn't read them in 9th)

    My Left Foot

There are many more, but that's a good start.  Tenth grade English (at least in my state) is supposed to be world literature.  You can read American and British, but be sure you read pieces from elsewhere in the world, too.

  2. Jules Verne, HG Wells, and Stanislaw Lem kick ***. Dumas is good for a bit of adventure.

  3. In 10th grade we read the following in English Honors class:

    -To Kill A Mocking Bird

    -Cyrano de Bergerac

    -Julius Caesar

    -Their Eyes Were Watching God

    -Great Expectations

  4. well we read romeo and juliet. also we read the things they carried by tim obrien. that book was about the korean war. very different, but u learn a lot. my favorite book is night by Ellie Wiesel. it is a book about WW11. very wonderful and informative. beware its a little graphic. and the book Uglies is very good. it is the 1st book in a series.

  5. The Scarlet Pimpernel

    Great Expectations

    A Child Called IT

    Night

  6. Things Fall Apart by Achebe

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

    The Odyssey by Homer

Picture of Dorian Grey by Oscar Wilde

    Fences by Wilson

Flags of our Fathers by Bradley and Powers

    Bleachers by Grisham
