  1. There are lots of low calorie options. Try some recipes from the Goa region, where fish is a very popular staple. Masaledar Sem  (spiced fish) is fun to make on a barbeque.

Generally speaking, avoid curries witha lot of sauce, as these can have a significant oil or ghee content. Similarly, do not indulge in deep fried options, such as puri breads or pakora.

Opt for chicken dishes (without skin, and preferably breast meat) rather than lamb or other red meat. Tandoori chicken can also be made easily at home.

Given the religious diversity of India, there are also many vegetarian options, intrinsically lower in calories, for consideration. Tarka daal (red lentil based) is very tasty.

Plain boiled basmati rice has a great flavour of its own, but pilau rice is not too calorific to have occasionally. Avoid biryani dishes - lots of weight gain here!

Paratha also are high in calories, but naan bread or chapatis are fine, as long as you do not take them brushed with ghee or butter. As accompanyments prefer Indian pickles and salads to chutneys, as the latter contain sugar.

Indian cook books are most reliable when by an Indian author.
