I can never take the "Greens" seriously, because all they ever do is harp on about the effects of human activity, and then propose a sticking-plaster solution to the problem.

You cannot, and will not repair the environment, or prevent depletion of raw materials, merely by tinkering with taxes, encouraging car-sharing, extra buses and trains, road tolls and re-cycling schemes.

When will they realise that it requires PRIMARY thinking, rather than REACTION?

Take something as simple as a washing-machine.

The life cycle is probably about 5 years; following which it will need to be replaced. Breaking a washing machine down and re-cycling is not exactly a simple task. It contains steel, plastic, aluminium, neoprene, copper, zinc-plating, carbon, circuit-boards, rubber and a whole host of other things.

A new washing machine is  heavy and bulky, requiring manufacture, storage, transportion and shipping, then warehousing, distribution, showroom facilities, further distribution and eventual installation. When the machine dies, it requires most things in reverse if it is to be re-cycled properly.

If, instead of 5 years, a washing machine had to have a useful working life of 10 years, then everything that now contributes to environmental damage would be halved.

Is this too simple?
