  1. It will be more expensive to fly into one city and fly out of another.  I've done this before in Europe and it is significantly more.  I would highly recommend flying in and out of Rome - it tends to be cheaper to go through Rome.  And then book internal flights or trains (on Alitalia, for example) on Orbitz.

I've flown into Rome, then taken an Alitalia/AirFrance code share to/from Naples, and then flown back home through Rome.  I've also done this to go to Paris as well.

If you insist on flying in and out of cities, I recommend booking a roundtrip internal flight anyway.  I've done this too.  I've flown into Rome, and out of Paris.  I took a train from Rome to Naples, and then a short internal flight from Naples to Paris.  I recommend booking roundtrip for short internal flights, even if you'll only be using half of the ticket - the roundtrip tickets are far less expensive than a one-way flight.  When booking, make the return flight (which you won't be using) at least a month after the departure to get the lowest airfare.

  2. Sure - you can get an "open jaws"ticket into and out of Italy - it will depend on the US carrier you use - may can't get to Marco Polo in Venice, but might do Milan. In 10 days you'll need to hustle to see it all.  Travel by train & use the high-speed trains if you can.

After the sites in Roma (at least 3 days),  I'd head north to Florence - Pisa is an easy daytrip from Florence to see the Tower.  Skip the Cinque Terre as you'll need to work your way all the way across Italy to get to Venice - I'd suggest an overnight in Bologna on the way to Venice.  Stay two or three days in Venice and do stay in Venice proper - it's so lovely at night!

Enjoy your honeymoon & good luck!

  3. Not knowing whether you are renting a car or going by train -- but none of those places are "day trippable" from the others they are too far apart, you would have to plan your trip around spending a couple of days in each place.

To me Rome is the place that has the most things to see and do and I would take at least 3 full days there.  Florence you can "do" in one or two days.  There are lots of interesting places between Florence and Cinque Terre and there and Venice, some like Pisa you only need a hour or so, Verona is nice Parma ... you at least one full day venice Probably two and there's your ten day trip.

Oh yeah, if you want to see the David in Florence -- be careful it's closed on Mondays or Tuesdays and also I think you need to get tickets for the Ufizzi gallery in advance.

I recommend you get a decent guidebook and look at some maps to he, you figure out what is the best way to go.

  4. To fly from Rome to Venice it is not a good strategy. You will spend so much time in going from cities to airports and back...by train it's easier, faster, more confortable and cheaper expept if you travel estreme north to extreme south or to the islands.

Rome-Florence by high speed train is 1.30 h (both stations are in near to the centre and near to hotels)

    Florence-Venice is 2.45 h.

If you are not too hungry of monuments, try a day trip to some smaller and less famous centre in Tuscany or Umbria like Cortona, Orvieto...or similar they are quiet and romantic destinations.
