I will be travelling to France in September and would really appreciate some suggestions as to where to go and how long to spend in each place. I am flying into Nice and out of Paris 11 days later, and will not be hiring a car. Oh, and I don't speak much French, if that's an issue to consider!

  1. Hmm if you're not hiring a car how will you get around?!

Knowing french is handy! ;) But you will pick some up, oh and learn some hany phrases off by heart, just in case!

I envy you, you get to tour France!

I suggest spend a day or two in a couple of cities, and explore landmarks and absorb the culture.

    I suggest you visit...

Paris = 2 days at least.

Toulouse = Lovely city from what i hear.

Bordeaux = Great wine and food!

Nice will be nice...hehe no pun intended, sorry. Spend a day at the beach...have fun!

What do you like to do?

Are you a history and castle person, or a modern french fashion kinda person?! Or inbetween? We kinds need to know more of your interests if you want us to help!

    Goodluck! Bon voyage! Have fun!

  2. 11 days is not such a long time.  My suggestion is:

    3 days in Nice and doing day trips;

    3 days Avignon or Arles

    2 days Lyon

    then directly to Paris.

Train travel is very reliable in France, and you can travel between these places by train, and do day trips as well.

It might be a good idea to get a guidebook and work out an intinerary based on your interests.

Knowledge of French is not an issue. Just be polite, smile a lot, and learn the basics such as Bonjour (good day/hello), Merci (thank you).  Make sure you say Bonjour when walking into a small shop, doesn't matter if  no-one answers but it is polite and the service will be better!

  3. Check the website www.sncf.fr for passes. Be aware though that most "grand lines" are now linked by TGV train, which require reservation and probably a surcharge.

Do not hitchhike, it has become increasingly dangerous to do so.

Close to Nice, you have the city of Grasse, which is famous for the perfume industry. Worth one day.

The towns of Arles and Nimes are quite old and have interesting ruins to visit. Aix en Provence is a university town, rather close to Marseilles. You could probably meet lots of english-speaking young folk there ans spend some good time.

Lyon is worth a couple of days. Eat in the old Lyons, there are quite good clubs on the banks of the Rhone river and the Fourviere cathedral is worth a visit. The tourist office can provide a map of "traboules", which are a network of hidden streets and private passages in the center of the town.

You will probably read a lot about Paris, but if you are interested in Airplanes, the Bourget air museum is worth a visit.

Time permitting a visit to the Mont Saint Michel (a middle-ages abbey perched on top of an island) or the Caen memorial are worthwhile.

  4. there are a lot of different important places in paris france... star with bounjour!
