Suggestion for a 4-day travel plan for places (Malaria free) to visit between Cancun and Veracruz in Mexico?

We are traveling to Mexico in 3 weeks time. Will arrive in Cancun on 23rd and need to be at Veracruz on 27th for an event on 28th. The rest of our 2-week trip will be mainly in Veracruz and Mexico City. Only first 4 days between Cancun and Veracruz is not planned. Can anyone suggest a couple of places to visit for these 4 days? We would like to avoid Malaria area if possible.

By the way, does anyone know are antimalarial tablets recommended if traveling to Villahermosa?

Thank you, everyone!

  1. You don't say how you will be traveling from Cancun to Veracruz...bus or car? There are interesting things to see  and do along the way that would be easy with a car but not so easy if you plan on using a long distance bus.

I have traveled extensively throughout the southeast region of Mexico and have never felt as if I needed anything other than an effective insect repellent.

Villahermosa is neither a "villa" (small village),nor is it hermosa (beautiful). The capital of Tabasco is as flat and hot as a frying pan,and is sprinkled liberally with satellite dishes, luxury hotels, and fast-food joints. It's a city built by crude oil. It's not all bad though, the lagoons, parks, and pedestrian walkways make it conducive to daytime rambling. It's proximity to the Palenque ruins and its strategic location  have made it a common stopover for travelers.

I would also recommend a stopover in the walled city of Campeche. It's a city full of surprises and photo opportunities.Around practically every corner are beautiful colonial churches, foreboding stone embattlements and fantastic hole in the wall restaurants.Old wood ,stone and stucco frame one of the Peninsula's prettiest central parks.

Some nice beaches too..... See images link below

If you need more specific information on the area or want to to know about some other things to see and do feel free to email me.

  2. We don't have malaria, as far as I know we haven't had a case in many years....

  3. Hi Alison

There are many things to do in Cancun, but don't miss Xelha (water park), Tulum (mayan ruins by the sea) and if possible go to Chichen Itza the most impressive mayan ruins I've seen. Buy an insect repellent and always drink bottled water easy to buy anywhere.

I live in Veracruz, the port by the beach I have never heard of a Malaria case around here....

You'll love the beach at Cancun and probably dislike it at Veracruz, here as it is the most important port for import/export of the country the water is polluted and the sand is not white...but anyway the food is great! try the black beans, and the town is nice too.

Villahermosa is south of Veracruz, and México city is north, so... I don't see the connection really. I'd recomend you to visit Puebla instead, is the natural stop, as it was founded by the Spaniards as a place to rest in the middle of the way from Veracruz to Mexico. It's a colonnial city with aprox 2 million people one of the best cousine in the country, lots of history and a modern area too.

  4. México is "Mallaria Free".

Malaria is a problem in África, we are in América.

All the area you mentioned is great, I wish go there too.
