I am looking to buy a new bike within the next few weeks. I want it mostly to commute to work, but also am maybe looking into do some actual mountain biking. Does any one know of a decent priced bike that will allow me to do both. Or am I better off just buying a Urban style bike and then buying a mountain bike a 1 or 2 years from now. I live about 6 miles away from work. Brand Suggestions or Specific Bikes will help. Just looking for some more knowledgeable peoples advice.

Also I don't really want to spend more then a few hundred dollars.

  1. I would defiently get a bike with a 700 cm wheel if your gonna be traveling on the road. I think it is best to get two bikes that serve your purposes. The bikes that try to serve all your purposes fail in other places usually.

Check out GIANT for commnuter bikes:

  2. Biking is my only transportation. The last few bikes I had have been mountain bikes.  Right now I have a Mongoose XR200. It has lasted me since Sept. of '07. So far the only major problems I have had with it s an occasional flat tire.  I just take it to the bike shop and let them repair it. It may cost a little more than what I want to pay ($35-$40) but at least I don't have to mess with it.   I bought the bike at Wal-Mart for around $200-$215.  It's better then $400-$500 for the same bike at a bike shop.

  3. i would look at Trek Bikes...they have a range from street racing bikes to hard core mountain bikes...they should have the bike just for you.
