What can I do to prevent iliotibial band syndrome?

  1. There is a stretch which is difficult to describe in words but which you can probably find on line.  Extend one foot.  Place the trailing foot behind and to the left for the right foot and to the right for the left foot.  Flex down until you feel the stretch.  

    Follow the recommendations on the listed site.  Be especially careful about uneven surfaces.  Remember most roads have a camber, that is the road slopes down to the shoulder to allow water run off.

    ITBS is an overuse injury so be careful to increase distance and intensity slowly.
