Question:

Suggestions for a good tuna substitute?

I am hoping to make a "Tuna" casserole for dinner tonight but have never cooked with a tuna substitute. This is the recipe I might use as a template. I'm changing a few things around to make it healthier:

Do you have to modify the cooking times when using the tuna substitutes or just follow the directions? Any help is appreciated, thanks!

  1. Some diced, sauteed tofu, or some cooked, crumbled meat substitute would be good in this. I don't know of any fish substitutes, but other subs would go good. If you are ok with eggs, try some hard-cooked egg diced into it!

  3. how about portabella mushrooms, they are meaty, but not meat!!!

    Add** it is pretty funny that someone would recommend pot roast in the vegetarian/vegan section

  4. Extra-firm tofu might work, if you're gentle so you don't break the pieces up too much ... Garbanzo beans might work, but they're a little hard.  Maybe Great Northern white beans?  Shelled edaname might be really good too .... or al dente cauliflower florets

I've never tried it (because I never liked fish) and I don't have a recipe, but I know there are plenty of recipes floating around out there for mock tuna salad based on chickpeas.  Not sure how a tuna casserole compares to a tuna salad, having never eaten either, but chickpeas would be a whole lot easier to source than premade mock tuna (unless you have a vegan grocery at your disposal.)

  6. I have seen recipes for faux tuna salad that contain tempeh or chickpeas.  

    I think tempeh or maybe even frozen then thawed tofu would give a good texture, though obviously nothing like the original.

  7. I like to soak raw cashews for about an hour.  Pour off the liquid (but save it for adding to soups or sauces) and then chop the soft cashew.  I add celery and chooped olives... use for sandwhich spread!

  8. sorry about that i do not know if it is the store but Tuno by worthington is wonderful to eat but you will have to get it from worthington foods. you do not have to cook any non meat like regular meat because it is not meat and germs that meat have are not the issue.

    take the porduct and use the amount called for of meat  mix and bake like the recipe calles for just do not have to cook the non meat first. go stright into the mixing bowl.
