ll be taking a roadtrip with my family (no children) to Mexico, driving from San Diego for a few days.

I'd love to hear some suggestion for places to stay (hopefully nicer places with good beaches), cities to go to - or any other travel tips.

Thanks,

  1. Lately, I have made 2 major roadtrips in Mexico:

    - Chihuaha and Copper Canyon: This was one of my best roadtrips ever. You start in Chihuahua, go to down to Cuauhtémoc (huge Menonite town), then the Basaseachic falls (the bigges in Mexico), then to Creel (amazing, little town, where city Mexicans mingle with local 'indios Tarahumaras), then go to Divisadero (where you will find the most amazing view of the Copper Canyon - bigger than the Grand Canyon). And you just can keep going, and going.. It was amazing.

    - Mexico City-Cancún: Great tour! You leave Mexico City and stop in Puebla to visit Cholula, where the biggest pyramid in the country lies and have amazing cuisine in downtown Puebla. Then continue to Orizaba, where you can see the Pico de Orizaba (the biggest mountain in the country... really really huge!!), and then you can go to Catemaco and visit the witches!! Then continue to Villahermosa, just to stop over and then continue next day. In your way to Campeche, there's a reservoir with this huge swamps. You go trough Champotón, a small, colorful fishing town. Then get to Campeche and visit the original city walls used to protect themselves from pirates! Then you can go Uxmal, great Mayan site. Then go up to Celestún, another reservoir with flamingos and a little petrified forest. Then go to Mérida which is a looooovely city, with probably the best Mexican cuisine, beautiful colonial downtown, with great haciendas in its surroundings; they also got good night life so you can have a good drink somewhere. Then go to Chichen Itzá and visit one of the new 7 wonders of the world ; ). Then continue to Cancún, get a sun tan and rest. Then head down to Playa del Carmen, to Xcaret, Xel-Há, Cobá and Tulum.

These are 2 great options!! I know that from San Diego it can be far, but it is totally worthy to go!!

  2. What part of Mexico are you going to?  Baja? Sonora?  or furthur south/  Makes a difference.  you will need to get mexican car ins.  many places sell this, but my fav. 9 low prices and nice filks0 is San Xavier...www.mexico-autoinsurance.com.  1888-327-1255.  If you are going to only Sonora or Baja, you do not need a mexican car permit.  See websites below.  if you are going to drive to other areas, you will need a vehicle permit.  You need to have your registration and title with you for this .  if the car is financed, you must have a letter of permission from the lender to bring the car to Mexico.  And you must have a credit card for them to imprint to save. this is used to charge a fine to prople wh tryto leave Mexico without their vehicle as it is illegal to sell an american car in Mexico.  If you are driving down thru Baja, see website below about that route. There are numerous sites about driving in Mexico...some are below.  I have not rravelled in that part f mexico...would love too!  I live in the state of Veracruz, but the same basic rules and precautions apply.  Hope you have a great trip!
