I want to take my boyfriend away fort he weekend in August but not just do the bog standard hotel option

To give you an idea of what i have already looked at include hring a camper van (a nice one!!) but they dont really do weekend rentals and the other thing i fancied was hiring a canal boat but again the only really hire for the week and is expensive - anyone got any ideas? £200 for both of us max

  1. I'm taking my husband for a surprise trip (he doesn't know about it yet) to Edinburgh, by coach, for a two night stay, which includes the Military Tattoo (he was in the Army so I think he will enjoy that experience).

A few years ago, for his birthday, we did a weekend coach trip to Paris.

Should you want to do the canal boat thing, August is a bad time anyway (too many boats out on the canal and many of them heading to the National Canal Festival near Wolverhampton over the August Bank Holiday), check out the hire firms maybe for September/October when they will often have a craft available for short rental and prices are lower out of the main holiday period.

The bog-standard hotel would work if you could check out events around the Country in which he might be interested and tie your visit to that, e.g. the Balloon Festival in Bristol, the Jazz Festival at Upton on Severn, Ship Open Days at Portsmouth, etc.

  2. How about one of those weekends where you get to race F1 stylee cars or go in those zorb balls?

or, and this is something I love - paintballing:

Paintballing is brilliant and I'm sure would appeal to both of you.   Oh, Ok, maybe not both of you, but if you accept the fact that you're both going to get filthy and bruised, then I'm sure you'll both enjoy    :o)

    have fun

  3. Get a cheap flight to just about anywhere in UK - from Scotland to Northern Ireland and book a B and B ahead of getting there. That'll be about £150 tops. Check out Ryanair etc. You could fly to City of Derry in NI and stay in the city somewhere and tour the walls, visit the Grainan of Aileach too.
