I have a hectic work schedue, the only time I really get to sit and take it easy is during lunch hour. The nearest food outlet to our office is an Indian cafeteria. However, I have to cut down on sugar and carbs (so rice is a no-no). Please give suggestions on what Indian dishes I can eat that are low cal, healthy and yummy (hint: I looooove spicy) ;-)

  1. You said you have to cut down on sugar and carbs, but that doesn't mean that you have to eat low cal.  Low carb is not a low fat/low cal lifestyle.

I'd stick with the curries, the tandoori meats, saag paneer, salads without added sugars, and you could have a few pappadum.

Watch the chutneys - some are very sugary.

  2. try things that use lentils/beans such as any daal dish... chickpea "stew" (channa masala) is really good.  It's basically tomatoes, onions, spices and chickpeas.  Protein dishes are good as long as they aren't in creamy sauces (no tikka, some saag paneers, chicken makhani/butter chicken).  You'll be able to eat a lot of the vegetarian dishes as long as they aren't deep fried or potato laden.

  3. Low carb Indian food is not easy:  stick to Tandoori dishes, grilled tikkas and kebabs.

All those yummy biryanis, pulaos, naans and other flatbreads are a big no no.
