Question:

Suggestions for sushi for someone who doesn't like seafood at all or seaweed that much?

I've tried a couple kinds that I like: there was a tempura sweet potato one, and I can sometimes eat a veggie roll, but i don't really like the taste of seaweed. The sweetness of the sweet potato kind of cut out the seaweed taste, but I was traveling when I tried it and haven't been able to find anything like it since. I think I could handle the seaweed if the roll was just really good. I love avocado and cucumber and most veggies they put in them and I like the cream cheese they put in them. But no seafood of any type! Can I ask for a California or Philadelphia roll without the crab? Or is that insulting? Is there any type of sushi made without the seaweed? Thanks for your help!

  1. There's lots of options at good sushi places, especially with the fillings.  And they get a lot of vegatarians in there, so it doesn't strike them weird if you don't want the crab or shrimp.

The seaweed might be a bigger problem at lower end sushi places but I promise if you go to a good one, they'll have them wrapped in cucumber or egg wrap.

I don't mind the seaweed but I prefer to not see it so at buffets I tend to pick the ones with the rice/sesame on the outside.  It's the consistency more than the taste that bothers me and I dont' get it that waty.

  2. California roll spici tuna

  3. Many sushi places can use a thin slice of cucumber or blanched zucchini instead of nori (seaweed).  These are referred to as "cucumber wrapped or zucchini wrapped" rolls.

These are pretty common, esp in CA.  I have even had "sushi rolls" wrapped in a long wide thin strip of carrot instead of nori.

These come in a variety of fillings (veg and non seafood too), most sushi places are accommodating.  Next time, simply ask for a cucumber wrapped roll with avocado, cream cheese, veggies...... it sounds healthy & delicious!

  4. If you don't like seaweed, then you don't like sushi. It's okay, you don't have to like every kind of food.

  5. Sushi are made to your order. You can ask for anything you want....  If you don't like the taste of NORI, then ask the chef to roll it inside-out.  He/she can actually have the NORI on inside of the roll rather than outside.

This way, it doesn't really touch your tongue and you won't taste that much.  The rolled sushi needs NORI so that rice has something to stick to.  You cannot make that type of sushi without it.

California rolls and Philadelphia rolls are American inspired invention.  No such things exist in Japan.  Therefore, there is no traditional 'insult the chef' type things to worry about.  If you are in Japan, you wouldn't want to tell chefs how to do his job.
