I've been vegan for about 2 months and used to take Tylenol PM on a pretty regular basis. Can anyone tell me a vegan substitution, organic substitute that can help me fall asleep on those restless nights? THANKS!!!

  1. Well, there's a difference between using something to help you sleep and a vitamin supplement.

I have one of those noise machines that can play white noise, a babbling brook, etc.  Many have a timer so it will shut off after a set period of time.

A warm bath or shower before bed can also induce sleep, especially if you use lavender- and/or vanilla-scented soap.

Chamomile infusions are said to be relaxing.  Any tea shop should have herbal infusions that help induce sleep.  Any Whole Foods should have a great tea aisle with many different types of infusions, some of which are said to be good for sleep.  Celestial Seasonings has a Sleepytime tea that may work for you.  I'm not sure, though, if their herbs are organic.

By the way, since it's not really tea, it's called an infusion or a tisane.

  2. A natural herb that has been used for this very reason for many years is chamomile.  Also great when a child has colic (suggested to me by a doctor in Italy many years ago for my son).  I would talk to your doctor about it since it appears that you already have spoken to them about your problem.

My doctor likes the thought of drinking chamomile over giving a drug - and also suggested moderate exercise during the day as an aid as well.  She also suggested making and following a set pattern to prepare for bed.

You know - example would be something like laying out clothes for the next day - getting bath water ready.  A nice soak in the tub (I use mint and lavender in my tub water - many times rose oil) to relax and turn off my mind.  Meaning lay back and RELAX and turn off the mind to all the stress that you have had for the day.  Nice cup of chamomile tea after slipping into something nice to sleep in (I have a real THING for silky night things - relaxing and comfrotable to sleep in).  I do NOT listen to the news before going to bed.  Climb into bed - and I am out.

It doesn't happen overnight - but once you start having a pattern to your sleep - just going into the pattern you find that you start getting sleepy.

Doing this while attempting to get my med's under control months ago really was a great help to me (sheesh - almost a year now).  If I have a really bad day at work now - stressed because of computer mess ups and problems with upgrades - all I have to do is to step into my 'pattern' - and I am totally relaxed and ready for bed by the end of the steps that I take.

I have a real THING against pills and will do pretty much anything not to have to take them.  The only ones that I take now - are for the mild seizure problem that I have - - and some nitro tablets if my heart starts acting up (RARE) - B12 once a week.  Other than that - I don't take any sort of pills at all.

Maybe it will help - maybe it won't.  But what the heck - give it a shot and see if it works for you.

  3. My sleeping habitats have improved since I have become a raw vegan and I am more active. If you want the more natural way, I would recommend green juice/smoothies; plenty of nutrition and also exercise, maybe run or any actives a few hours before going to sleep. Their are some natural remedies you can search the website for helping you sleep better. Good luck! :-)

  4. Try Xanax

  5. The doctor put me on mild sedatives a couple of years ago. He advised me only to take them for a short while as you get used to there effects.

You can get herbal sleeping tablets like nytol and calming tablets, but i found they either had no effect or they were far stronger then the tablets the doctor gave me (and so should only be used in emergencies).

I was very skeptical at first, but my mom recommended lemon balm tea (lemon balm is know for its calming properties), it worked really well, i frequently have a cup of lemon balm tea before bed if I'm over tired/ stressed out/
