Suggestions on a weekend trip to New York, please.?

We are giving my mom a Broadway show and weekend in New York as her 70th birthday gift. She'll be accompanied by my brother. I was looking for suggestions on where to stay and how far in advance we need to purchase show tickets. I think we can figure out airlines. Flying out of O'hare. Does anyone know of any place to look for packages, and any other advice about attending a Broadway show. Thank you very much.
