The other day, my 4 year old asked me if her Grammie and Pappaw were brother and sister. I told her no but I don't know how to explain that relationship to her at this age. I would appreciate any suggestions. Thank you.

  1. i agree, there are alot of illustrated books and dvds that help parents deal with telling these things to kids.

  2. When a man and a woman (we'll leave it at man and woman till a bit older, lol) get older, they fall in love sometimes.  Then they get married.  Four year olds understand a lot.  She'll get it.

  3. lol.  just say they are married.  husband and wife.

  4. When you become a grown up, you find someone you really love and you get married.  That's what people do when they love each other, then they have a family.  Grammie and Pappaw loved each other so much, this is what they did.

  5. Our 3 year old asked a similar question and we said that they were a mommy and daddy and they loved each other like we do.  She got it and now she points to couples and says one of two things..."they love each other", or " that's a mommy and daddy"...it's adorable.

  6. I would say something like, as kids grow up to be adults, they meet lots of people.  One day a man and a woman meet who have never met before, but find out they really like each other.  They enjoy spending time together, and they end up loving that person very much.

Then they decide to spend the rest of their lives together because they love each other that much.  So they get married.  Then they can start their own family.  Then explain how you and your husband met and why you love him.  And that is how she got here.

  7. Tell her no Brother and Sisters can not get married that 2 people that are Not related can get married.

  8. get a childrens book or video that will explain to them how people get married in life

  9. just tell them strait out this is momie and this is daddy. they will ajust from there.

  10. Say they were two good friends who fell in love and then married.  Then explain they're your or your husbands parents, like you are his parents.

  11. Try showing her their wedding photos if they have any. My son sees my photos and always asks me, "Why did you marry daddy?" And then sooner or later, he'll tell me, "Are you going to marry me?"

It's the cutest & sweetest expression of love coming from my son! But seeing me and his dad dressed up: mommy wearing a white dress, a veil, and flowers, and daddy wearing a tux - and me telling him that we are married, helped him understand the concept.
